Ingredients

For the Dough

  • cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter

Instructions

  • Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir until dissolved, then sprinkle the yeast on top.
Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This indicates the yeast is active.
  • Step 2: Mix the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Step 3: Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes.
  • Step 4: First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Step 5: Shape the Dough
Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it into a greased loaf pan or shape it freeform on a baking sheet.
  • Step 6: Second Rise
Cover the dough and let it rise again for 30 minutes until it has puffed up.
  • Step 7: Bake
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  • Step 8: Cool and Serve
Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy fresh or store for later!

Notes

  • For a soft crust, brush the loaf with melted butter immediately after baking.
  • Adjust the amount of flour slightly if the dough feels too sticky or too dry.
