Ingredients
  

For the Cake

  • cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Gel food coloring (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)

For the Frosting

  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • Gel food coloring (optional, for decorative accents)

  • Pre-made clown figurines or edible clown toppers

Instructions
 

  • Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line six 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper. (If you have fewer pans, bake in batches.)
  • Step 2: Make the Cake Batter
    In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
    Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  • Step 3: Divide and Color
    Divide the batter evenly into six bowls. Use gel food coloring to tint each portion into a different rainbow color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple).
  • Step 4: Bake the Layers
    Pour each colored batter into a prepared cake pan. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    Cool the cakes in their pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Step 5: Make the Frosting
    In a large bowl, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating on low speed until incorporated.
    Mix in vanilla extract and heavy cream, then increase speed to medium-high and beat until fluffy.
  • Step 6: Assemble the Cake
    Level each cake layer with a serrated knife for even stacking.
    Place the purple layer on a cake board or plate. Spread a thin layer of frosting on top, then stack the blue layer. Repeat with green, yellow, orange, and red layers.
    Frost the outside of the cake with a crumb coat. Chill for 20 minutes, then apply a smooth final coat of frosting.
  • Step 7: Decorate
    Add clown toppers, piped frosting accents, and rainbow sprinkles for a festive finish.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without thinning the batter.
  • Refrigerate the cake for easier slicing.
