Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80% lean recommended)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced (Russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken/celery)
  • ½ cup milk (or sour cream for creaminess)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ cup French fried onions (optional topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Brown the beef: In a skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until no longer pink. Drain excess fat. Add diced onion and garlic; sauté until soft.
Layer potatoes: Arrange half the potato slices in the baking dish. Top with half the beef mixture.
Add sauce: Whisk soup and milk; pour half over the beef. Repeat layers.
Bake covered with foil for 45 minutes. Uncover, sprinkle cheese (and French fried onions if using), and bake 10–15 more minutes until bubbly.
    Rest 5 minutes before serving.
