Ingredients
  

For the hamburger steaks

  • 1 lb Ground beef Use a lean cut for best flavor.
  • 1 Onion, sliced Yellow or sweet adds mild sweetness.
  • Salt to taste Kosher salt is recommended.
  • Pepper to taste Freshly ground black pepper heightens flavor.
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder Can substitute with fresh minced garlic.

For the gravy

  • 2 tbsp Flour All-purpose works best; use cornstarch for gluten-free.
  • 2 cups Beef broth Homemade or low-sodium varieties are preferred.
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Gives the gravy a delicious umami kick.

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and any additional seasonings. Form into thick patties, about ½ inch thick.
  • Let patties sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before cooking.
  • Aim for medium-thin slices of the onions for caramelization.

Cooking

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add olive oil. Once hot, cook patties for about 5-6 minutes on each side until browned and internal temperature reaches 160°F. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, cook sliced onions until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Sprinkle flour over onions, stirring to combine. Gradually pour in beef broth, stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, and simmer until gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, soaking in the brown gravy for about 2-3 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve with mashed potatoes or rice. Allow leftovers to cool and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.
