Description
A delightful dessert featuring caramelized apples beneath a flaky puff pastry, reminiscent of family gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed)
- ½ apple (use varieties like Envy, Honey Crisp, or Granny Smith)
- 4 tablespoons light brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoon apple pie spice
- 1 egg (beaten, optional for egg wash)
- Turbinado sugar (optional for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Peel and core half an apple, then slice it into 24 thin slices.
- In a bowl, mix the brown sugar and apple pie spice until evenly combined.
- Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into 6 equal pieces, approximately 3in x 4.5in each.
- On the prepared baking sheet, place about a teaspoon of the spiced brown sugar mixture as a base and position 4 slices of apple in a shingled pattern. Add another teaspoon of the brown sugar mixture on top.
- Place a piece of puff pastry over the apple layer, pressing the edges down firmly, and create indentations along the edges with a fork.
- Optional: Brush with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle turbinado sugar on top.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool for a few minutes, then carefully flip the pastries to reveal the caramelized apples underneath and serve warm.
Notes
Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a delightful touch. For added flavor, consider sprinkling sea salt before serving.
