A delicious Slovak poppy seed roll featuring soft dough wrapped around a sweet and nutty poppy seed filling, perfect for any occasion.

- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk
- ⅓ stick unsalted butter (softened)
- 2 tablespoons granulated cane sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 egg white (set aside)
- ⅛ teaspoon fine salt
- 1 ½ cups finely ground poppy seeds
- ¾ cup milk
- ½ cup white granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon spiced rum
- 2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon zest
- 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ⅓ cup golden raisins
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Combine warm milk and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg yolk; mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
- In a saucepan, combine poppy seeds, milk, sugar, honey, and spices. Heat over medium-low for about 15 minutes until thickened. Let cool.
- Stir in spiced rum, vanilla, lemon zest, and raisins into the cooled poppy seed mixture.
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
- Spread the poppy seed filling over the dough, leaving an inch around the edges.
- Starting from one long side, roll the dough into a log shape and pinch the seams to seal.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the roll on a greased baking sheet and brush with beaten egg white. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
