Description

A warm, fragrant Scandinavian cardamom bread that brings nostalgia and comfort with each slice.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Butter (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk and butter in a saucepan until melted; let cool slightly.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl.
  3. Combine the warm milk-butter and eggs with the dry ingredients.
  4. Form a soft dough by adding remaining flour gradually.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10-12 minutes.
  6. First rise by placing dough in a greased bowl until doubled (60-90 minutes).
  7. Punch down the dough and divide into three equal pieces, rolling them into ropes.
  8. Braid the ropes together and seal the ends.
  9. Second rise covered with a towel for 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Brush the loaf with egg wash.
  12. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  13. Cool slightly before serving warm with butter.

Notes

Ensure yeast is fresh for optimal rise. You can also freeze the dough for longer storage.
