A warm, fragrant Scandinavian cardamom bread that brings nostalgia and comfort with each slice.
Ingredients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cardamom
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Butter (for serving)
Instructions
- Warm the milk and butter in a saucepan until melted; let cool slightly.
- Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl.
- Combine the warm milk-butter and eggs with the dry ingredients.
- Form a soft dough by adding remaining flour gradually.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10-12 minutes.
- First rise by placing dough in a greased bowl until doubled (60-90 minutes).
- Punch down the dough and divide into three equal pieces, rolling them into ropes.
- Braid the ropes together and seal the ends.
- Second rise covered with a towel for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the loaf with egg wash.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool slightly before serving warm with butter.
Notes
Ensure yeast is fresh for optimal rise. You can also freeze the dough for longer storage.
