Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes (about 1 lb), diced
  • ½ white onion, finely diced
  • 12 serrano peppers, minced (seeds removed for milder heat)
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tbsp lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • Optional: 1 small avocado, diced
  • Optional: 1 clove garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Prep vegetables: Dice tomatoes, onion, and peppers to uniform small pieces. Chop cilantro.
  2. Combine: In glass bowl, gently mix all ingredients except avocado.
  3. Rest: Let sit at room temperature 15-30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  4. Adjust: Taste and add more lime or salt if needed. Fold in avocado if using.
  5. Serve immediately with tortilla chips or as a topping.

Notes

  • For best texture: Use firm-ripe tomatoes and drain excess liquid after chopping
  • Heat control: Start with ½ pepper and add more to taste
  • Storage: Keeps refrigerated 2 days (avocado version is best fresh)
  • Authentic touch: Add 1 tbsp minced radish for crunch
  • Presentation: Serve in a molcajete for traditional style
