Ingredients
Scale
- 2/3 cup whole milk, warmed (about 110°F)
- 5 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 large eggs, room temperature, beaten
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup bread flour
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (for filling)
- 3 ounces cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, sifted
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (for frosting)
- 1/2 teaspoon maple extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and active dry yeast. Let this sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Mix Ingredients: Add the beaten eggs, softened butter, the remaining sugar, all-purpose flour, bread flour, and kosher salt to the yeast mixture. Mix on low speed until combined, then increase to medium speed and knead for about 5 minutes.
- Let It Rise: Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it’s doubled in size for about 1 to 2 hours.
- Roll the Dough: Punch down the dough gently and roll it out on a floured surface into a 10×15-inch rectangle.
- Make the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, and kosher salt. Spread this mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough.
- Form the Rolls: Starting from the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut into 9 equal rolls and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover and let rise until doubled in size again, about 1 hour.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 325°F and bake the rolls for 35-40 minutes until they’re golden brown.
- Prepare the Frosting: While the rolls are baking, mix the cream cheese, butter, confectioners’ sugar, maple syrup, and maple extract until smooth and fluffy.
- Frost and Serve: After the rolls are removed from the oven, let them cool for a few moments, then frost them generously.
Notes
Use real maple syrup for the best flavor. The rolls can be refrigerated overnight before the second rise.
