Description

A delicious, family-favorite recipe for classic homemade Kentucky Fried Chicken, featuring a unique blend of spices for a crispy, golden finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 whole chicken (cut into 8 pieces)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup ground paprika
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground white pepper
  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon dry ground mustard
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1½ teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon MSG (optional)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Cut the chicken into 8 parts, discarding the carcass. Pat dry to ensure a crispy finish.
  2. Marinate: In a large bowl, whisk together buttermilk and the beaten egg. Add the chicken, cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for maximum flavor absorption.
  3. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In another large bowl, combine flour and spices. This mixture will create the flavorful crust!
  4. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 175°F and prepare a baking sheet with a wire rack for the fried chicken.
  5. Heat the Oil: In a deep fryer or Dutch oven, heat 3 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F.
  6. Coat and Fry: Remove chicken from buttermilk and coat in flour mixture. Fry 3–4 pieces at a time for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden brown.
  7. Transfer: Once fried, transfer chicken to the rack in the oven to keep warm while frying the remaining pieces.
  8. Final Check: Ensure all pieces reach an internal temperature of 165°F before serving.

Notes

For best results, ensure chicken is at room temperature before frying. You can also marinate overnight for deeper flavor.
