Description
Fluffy and slightly sweet homemade Italian sandwich bread with a golden crust, perfect for sandwiches and family gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until bubbly and foamy.
- Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms; it should be slightly sticky but manageable.
- Flour a surface and knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Once risen, punch down the dough to release air, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover again and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Allow rising times for optimal flavor and texture. Experiment with flavors by adding herbs or cheese.
