Instructions
- Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour together in a medium bowl.
- Whisk the egg whites in a clean mixing bowl until soft peaks form, then gradually add granulated sugar.
- Gently fold the sifted mixture into the whipped egg whites, adding food coloring if desired.
- Transfer the batter to a piping bag and pipe heart shapes onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Let the piped macarons rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour until dry to the touch.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 18 to 20 minutes.
- For buttercream, beat softened butter, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, adjusting consistency with cream or milk.
- Assemble the macarons by piping buttercream onto half of the shells and sandwiching them with the other half.
