Description

Ingredients

  • 2 large egg whites (at room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for buttercream)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for buttercream)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Red food coloring (optional, for buttercream)

Instructions

  1. Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour together in a medium bowl.
  2. Whisk the egg whites in a clean mixing bowl until soft peaks form, then gradually add granulated sugar.
  3. Gently fold the sifted mixture into the whipped egg whites, adding food coloring if desired.
  4. Transfer the batter to a piping bag and pipe heart shapes onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Let the piped macarons rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour until dry to the touch.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 18 to 20 minutes.
  7. For buttercream, beat softened butter, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, adjusting consistency with cream or milk.
  8. Assemble the macarons by piping buttercream onto half of the shells and sandwiching them with the other half.
