Description
A quick and flavorful twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak using ground beef instead of steak. Packed with melted cheese, sautéed peppers and onions, and served on toasted hoagie rolls.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 8 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz for authenticity)
- 4 hoagie rolls, toasted
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Optional toppings: hot peppers, mushrooms, ketchup, mayonnaise
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and peppers, sauté for 5-6 minutes until softened.
- Push vegetables to one side, add ground beef to the other side. Break up meat and cook until browned (about 5 minutes).
- Mix beef with vegetables, add garlic, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt and pepper. Cook 2 more minutes.
- Reduce heat to low, top meat mixture with cheese slices, cover until melted (about 1 minute).
- Divide mixture among toasted hoagie rolls, pressing down slightly to compact.
- Serve immediately with optional toppings.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use a mix of ground beef and ground pork
- Can substitute with ground turkey for a lighter version
- Toast rolls with butter for extra crispiness
- Leftover mixture makes great nacho topping
- Add a splash of beef broth if mixture seems dry
