Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz for authenticity)
  • 4 hoagie rolls, toasted
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Optional toppings: hot peppers, mushrooms, ketchup, mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and peppers, sauté for 5-6 minutes until softened.
  2. Push vegetables to one side, add ground beef to the other side. Break up meat and cook until browned (about 5 minutes).
  3. Mix beef with vegetables, add garlic, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt and pepper. Cook 2 more minutes.
  4. Reduce heat to low, top meat mixture with cheese slices, cover until melted (about 1 minute).
  5. Divide mixture among toasted hoagie rolls, pressing down slightly to compact.
  6. Serve immediately with optional toppings.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use a mix of ground beef and ground pork
  • Can substitute with ground turkey for a lighter version
  • Toast rolls with butter for extra crispiness
  • Leftover mixture makes great nacho topping
  • Add a splash of beef broth if mixture seems dry
