Description

A comforting recipe for Russian stuffed cabbage rolls filled with ground meat and rice, served with a savory tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground meat (beef, pork, or turkey)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 pinch of sugar

Instructions

  1. Remove the core from the cabbage and peel off the leaves. Blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until pliable. Drain and cool.
  2. In a large bowl, mix ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and any herbs you prefer.
  3. Take a cabbage leaf, place filling at the base, fold the sides, and roll tightly. Repeat with remaining filling.
  4. Combine tomato sauce and water in a pot, season with salt, pepper, and sugar, and simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Place cabbage leaves at the bottom of a large pot, arrange rolls seam-side down, pour sauce over them, cover, and simmer on low for 40-50 minutes.

Notes

Check for doneness by ensuring cabbage is tender and filling is cooked. For best flavor, use a mixture of meats.
