Description
A comforting recipe for Russian stuffed cabbage rolls filled with ground meat and rice, served with a savory tomato sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground meat (beef, pork, or turkey)
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- Salt & Pepper to taste
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 cup water
- 1 pinch of sugar
Instructions
- Remove the core from the cabbage and peel off the leaves. Blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until pliable. Drain and cool.
- In a large bowl, mix ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and any herbs you prefer.
- Take a cabbage leaf, place filling at the base, fold the sides, and roll tightly. Repeat with remaining filling.
- Combine tomato sauce and water in a pot, season with salt, pepper, and sugar, and simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Place cabbage leaves at the bottom of a large pot, arrange rolls seam-side down, pour sauce over them, cover, and simmer on low for 40-50 minutes.
Notes
Check for doneness by ensuring cabbage is tender and filling is cooked. For best flavor, use a mixture of meats.
