Description

A delightful homemade dish with crispy tofu seasoned with garlic, chili, and aromatic spices, perfect for weeknight dinners or casual get-togethers.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 280g Medium Tofu
  • 475ml Water
  • 6 Garlic Cloves
  • 2 Red Chilli
  • 2 Spring Onions
  • 120g Cornstarch
  • 5 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Ground White Pepper
  • 0.25 tsp Fennel Seed
  • 0.5 tsp Ground Sichuan Peppercorn
  • 0.5 tsp Dashi Powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut the tofu into bite-sized squares and let it soak in water with salt for 10 minutes.
  2. Grind white pepper, fennel seeds, Sichuan peppercorn, and dashi powder into a fine mix.
  3. Chop garlic, red chili, and spring onions and set aside.
  4. Drain and dry the tofu, patting it dry with kitchen paper.
  5. Coat the tofu with cornstarch and let sit for 3 minutes.
  6. Heat oil in a pan and test by dropping in a small piece of tofu.
  7. Fry tofu until golden brown, about 10 minutes, then drain excess oil.
  8. Stir-fry garlic, red chili, and spring onions for 1-2 minutes, then combine with tofu and season.
  9. Garnish with extra spring onions and serve hot.

Notes

For best results, ensure the oil is hot enough before adding tofu to avoid sticking. Leftovers can be stored for up to 3 days.
