Ingredients

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (28-oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant (don’t let it brown).
  3. Pour in crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce, stirring to combine.
  4. Add oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, sugar, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
  6. Let sauce simmer uncovered for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Stir in fresh basil just before serving.
  9. Use immediately or store for later use.

Notes

  • For smoother sauce, blend with immersion blender before serving.
  • Can be refrigerated for up to 5 days or frozen for 3 months.
  • Add 1/2 cup red wine with the tomatoes for deeper flavor.
