Description

Delicious cranberry scones featuring tart cranberries and buttery, flaky dough, perfect for a cozy morning treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 Tbsp orange zest or lemon zest
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold salted butter, chopped into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk
  • 3/4 cup fresh or frozen cranberries

Instructions

  1. Chill the Butter: Cut the cold salted butter into small cubes and chill in the refrigerator while preparing the other ingredients.
  2. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, zest, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
  4. Cut in the Butter: Add the chilled butter to the dry mix, using a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Add Cranberries: Fold in the cranberries, ensuring they’re evenly distributed.
  6. Combine with Wet Ingredients: Make a well in the center, pour in buttermilk, and gently fold until it comes together.
  7. Form the Scones: Drop mounds of dough onto the baking sheet, leaving space between. Brush tops with buttermilk.
  8. Bake: Bake for 16-18 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool: Let scones cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

These scones are best served warm with butter, clotted cream, or jam. They can be frozen for up to a month.
