Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated white sugar
- 1 Tbsp orange zest or lemon zest
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup cold salted butter, chopped into small pieces
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk
- 3/4 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
Instructions
- Chill the Butter: Cut the cold salted butter into small cubes and chill in the refrigerator while preparing the other ingredients.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, zest, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
- Cut in the Butter: Add the chilled butter to the dry mix, using a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Cranberries: Fold in the cranberries, ensuring they’re evenly distributed.
- Combine with Wet Ingredients: Make a well in the center, pour in buttermilk, and gently fold until it comes together.
- Form the Scones: Drop mounds of dough onto the baking sheet, leaving space between. Brush tops with buttermilk.
- Bake: Bake for 16-18 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool: Let scones cool on a wire rack before serving.
