Description

A delightful Southern staple cake with decadent layers and luxurious praline frosting, perfect for celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Additional chopped pecans for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Add each egg one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk, starting and finishing with flour. Mix until just combined.
  7. Gently fold in the chopped pecans.
  8. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans.
  9. Bake for about 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 20 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
  11. For the frosting, melt the butter in a saucepan, then stir in brown sugar and heavy cream. Bring to a boil, stirring until smooth. Gradually whisk in powdered sugar.
  12. Once cakes are cool, frost layers with praline frosting and garnish with chopped pecans.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider adding cocoa powder or spices like cinnamon. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
