  • 1 cup (100 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2½ cups (500 g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1½ cups (360 ml) buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 cup (240 ml) hot coffee or boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F) and grease three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream together softened butter and granulated sugar in another bowl until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract and vegetable oil.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, mixing until combined.
  6. Slowly pour in hot coffee while mixing until a smooth batter forms.
  7. Divide batter among pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
