Ingredients

  • 2 pounds pork shoulder
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine
  • 1 tablespoon five-spice powder
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring (optional)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a medium bowl, mix together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sugar, rice wine, five-spice powder, minced garlic, and red food coloring (if using).
  2. Marinate the Pork: Place the pork shoulder in a zip-top bag or a shallow dish and coat with the marinade. Seal and let marinate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Prepare for Roasting: Place the marinated pork on a rack in a roasting pan.
  5. Roast the Pork: Roast for 30-40 minutes, basting with the remaining marinade every 10 minutes until caramelized and the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C).
  6. Rest and Slice: Let the pork rest for 10 minutes before slicing against the grain.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds on top and serve alongside rice or noodles.
