Description

A comforting and authentic Hungarian dish featuring tender chicken in a creamy paprika sauce, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour, divided
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika, divided
  • 4 tbsp butter, divided
  • 1 large sweet yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tsp kosher salt (or to taste)
  • ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ cup full-fat sour cream
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Cooked egg noodles (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the chicken pieces with 1½ tablespoons of flour and 1 tablespoon of paprika until evenly coated.
  2. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the chicken and sear until golden and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  3. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the same skillet. Add the onions and cook until soft and translucent, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Lower heat and stir in the minced garlic. Allow to cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant.
  5. Sprinkle in the remaining flour and paprika. Stir and cook for 2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth until smooth. Bring to a gentle simmer on low heat until thickened, about 5-8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Reduce heat to the lowest setting, then stir in sour cream until creamy. Return the chicken along with any juices back to the skillet, heating through gently.
  8. Garnish the Chicken Paprikash with fresh parsley and serve it over cooked egg noodles if desired.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or they can be frozen for up to a month. This dish actually tastes better the next day as the flavors meld.
