- 1 tbsp (12g) baking powder
- 1 tsp (5g) sugar
- 1/2 tsp (3g) salt
- 1/4 tsp (1g) garlic powder
- 1/2 cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 cup (120g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup (75g) diced cooked ham
- 1/4 cup (25g) chopped green onions
- 3/4 cup (180ml) cold buttermilk
- 1 tbsp (15ml) melted butter (for brushing)
- Optional: 1/4 tsp smoked paprika for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and garlic powder.
- Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in cheddar cheese, ham, and green onions until evenly distributed.
- Gradually add buttermilk, stirring just until dough comes together (don’t overmix).
- Turn dough onto floured surface and gently pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
- Cut into 12 squares or use a biscuit cutter for rounds.
- Place on prepared baking sheet, brush tops with melted butter, and sprinkle with smoked paprika if using.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve warm with extra butter if desired.

- For flakier biscuits: Keep all ingredients cold and handle dough minimally.
- Make ahead: Freeze unbaked biscuits on tray, then transfer to bag. Bake from frozen adding 2-3 extra minutes.
