Description

A delicious homemade caramelized onion jam that combines sweet and savory flavors, perfect for enhancing any dish.


Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 pounds yellow onions, sliced into thin half-moons
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the onions by peeling and slicing them into thin half-moon strips about 1/8 inch thick.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-low heat.
  3. Add the sliced onions and salt, and cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring frequently until the onions turn golden brown.
  4. Sprinkle in the brown sugar and pour in both the balsamic and apple cider vinegars, stirring to combine.
  5. Add black pepper, thyme leaves, and crushed red pepper flakes, and continue to cook for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the jam thickens.
  6. Remove from heat, let it cool slightly, then spoon into clean jars or containers.
  7. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks or freeze for longer storage.

For the best flavor, use high-quality onions and vinegars. Don’t rush the caramelization process!
