Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
- Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, starting and ending with dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Gently fold in the diced apples until evenly distributed.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare the frosting by beating the softened butter until creamy, then mixing in the powdered sugar and caramel sauce.
- Once the cakes are cool, frost between the layers and cover the top and sides of the cake with frosting. Drizzle additional caramel sauce over the top before serving.
