- 1 box of chocolate cake mix
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted)
- 1/4 cup cherry juice
- 2 cups vanilla pudding
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven according to cake mix instructions.
- Bake the chocolate cake as directed (30-35 minutes for a 9-inch round cake).
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a mixing bowl, whip the chilled heavy cream until beginning to thicken (about 2 minutes).
- Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, whipping until soft peaks form (2-3 minutes more).
- If using fresh cherries, wash, pit, and chop. Combine cherries with cherry juice.
- In a trifle dish, layer chopped chocolate cake, cherries, vanilla pudding, and whipped cream. Repeat layers until full, finishing with whipped cream and garnishing with chocolate shavings and cocoa powder.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
Notes
For best flavor, assemble trifle a day in advance. Can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
