- 1 packet of Fillo Pastry
- 2 cups walnuts (or substitute with almonds, pistachios, or cashews)
- 1 cup of butter (melted)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Chop the walnuts finely and mix them with cinnamon in a bowl.
- Lay out one sheet of fillo pastry and brush it with melted butter.
- Layer additional sheets of fillo, brushing each with butter.
- Sprinkle a portion of the walnut mixture over the pastry.
- Roll the pastry tightly into a log.
- Place the roll in a greased baking dish and repeat with remaining ingredients.
- Brush the top of the logs with melted butter.
- Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- While baking, combine sugar, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Pour the syrup over the hot baklava out of the oven.
- Cool slightly before slicing into pieces.
Notes
For a richer flavor, you can add honey or lemon juice to the syrup. Ensure unused fillo pastry is covered to prevent drying out.
