Description

A delightful breakfast casserole that combines chunks of bread soaked in a rich custard mixture, baked to golden perfection, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Prep the Baking Dish: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Tear the Bread: Tear the challah or brioche into bite-sized pieces and evenly distribute them in the dish.
  3. Make the Custard: Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture over the bread pieces, pressing down gently to immerse the floating pieces.
  5. Refrigerate: Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  6. Preheat Your Oven: On baking day, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Create the Streusel: Mix melted butter with brown sugar and flour to make a crumbly topping.
  8. Top and Bake: Sprinkle streusel over the soaked bread and bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  9. Serve Warm: Let it cool slightly, cut into squares and serve warm.

Notes

For best results, use stale bread. Customize by adding fruits or nuts.
