- 3 cups bread flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 cup bread flour (for dusting)
- 1 large ice cube
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the 3 cups bread flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon active dry yeast. Mix these dry ingredients well.
- Gradually add 1.5 cups warm water to the mixture. Stir until you have a sticky, cohesive dough.
- Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it sit at room temperature for 5 to 18 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and place your baking stone or baking sheet in the oven to heat up.
- Lightly flour your work surface, divide the dough, and gently form each piece into a cylinder.
- Transfer the baguettes to a floured dish or lined baking sheet and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Place a large ice cube on a pan at the bottom of the oven just before baking.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Cool on a wire rack for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
Store leftovers in a paper bag at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage. Allows for customization with herbs, cheese, or olives.
