How to Make From Scratch

  1. Prepare the Patties: Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, and seasonings, then shape into oval-shaped patties.
  2. Cook the Patties: Brown the patties in a hot skillet until both sides are well seared.
  3. Make the Gravy: In the same pan, sauté mushrooms, onions, and garlic, then create a gravy using beef broth and flour.
  4. Simmer the Patties: Return the patties to the pan and let them simmer in the gravy until cooked through and the flavors meld together.

When to Flip

When cooking the patties, flip them once they’ve developed a deep, golden-brown crust on one side—usually after 3-4 minutes. Be careful not to overcook them; they should be juicy inside.

How to Reheat

To reheat Salisbury steak, place it in a skillet over medium heat with a little extra broth or water to keep the gravy from drying out. Heat for 5-7 minutes until warmed through. Alternatively, microwave the steak and gravy for 2-3 minutes, stirring halfway.

Can You Save the Batter?

No batter is involved in this recipe, but you can prepare the patties and refrigerate them for up to 24 hours before cooking.

Can You Freeze?

Yes, Salisbury steak freezes very well. After cooking, allow the patties and gravy to cool completely. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

Directions:

  1. Make the Patties:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely diced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Brown the Patties:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and onion. Sauté for 4-5 minutes, until softened. Sprinkle in the flour and stir to coat the vegetables. Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Simmer the Patties:
Return the browned patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and reduce the heat to low. Cover and let the patties simmer in the gravy for 10-15 minutes, until fully cooked.

Editor’s Note:

For a lower-carb version, you can substitute almond flour or crushed pork rinds for the breadcrumbs. Salisbury steak is traditionally made with ground beef, but you can also use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. The gravy can be made richer by adding a splash of cream or a knob of butter toward the end of cooking.
